A few days ago the national media carried a story about how school children will be encouraged to grow vegetables in a plot at their local school. The resources will be provided.
I was thinking what a good idea. In the United States during World War Two many families grew what came to be known as "victory gardens." It was part of a patriotic effort to get the country through difficult economic times.
Maybe more Irish families could pick up on this idea as a way of dealing with some of the negative consequences of the recession. What you produce beyond your needs could be shared with extended family and neighbors.
My friend and colleague, Jean Roberts, has a garden that produces an abundance of fruit and vegetables each year. Jean, a contributor to this blog, will be publishing some gardening hints as the Spring approaches.
